The Funk Collective

The Funk Collective is an annual festival in Charleston, South Carolina that is considered to be "the best and wildest party celebrating breweries with a dedicated funk and sour program." It features more than fifty independent breweries. All of the profits from the festival are donated to Love Thy Neighbor, a network of non-profit organizations in Greenville, South Carolina.

In the Summer of 2018, Frontier Label volunteered to sponsor the event in Charleston and was given the opportunity to hand out public relations and advertising packages to all breweries in attendance. This package included VIP armbands, a sample pack of Frontier Label's various label substrate options, and a few specially designed collectible labels for the event.

As an intern at Frontier Label, I was asked to design specialty labels and worked for the majority of the summer making sure they were exactly right before they were mass-produced and given to the breweries in attendance. The main label, which I developed under the guidance of Kaki Myers, featured a hand-drawn pirate in the midst of an angry ocean, the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge in Charleston, SC, a watercolor background, and a wax stamp commemorating the 2018 Funk Collective.

I've gotten to work on a variety of designs for various products in the past but this is still one of my favorite products. This was also my first experience working directly with a Marketing Department at a company, hearing what they did and didn't like about the design, and how they thought viewers would interpret the artwork. Their feedback and constructive criticism allowed me to create something I will always be proud of. We were able to create packaging that was truly unique that will remain in my portfolio for the remainder of my career.
